A new milestone in quantum-secure communication has been reached as leading German business newspapers report on a successful pilot project aimed at protecting financial data in the emerging post-quantum era.
Following months of intensive testing and collaboration, Erste Group Bank AG, A1 Telekom Austria Group, and quantum technology company zerothird have successfully completed a pilot project demonstrating quantum-secure communication within a real banking infrastructure. The achievement has drawn attention from prominent publications including Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Handelsblatt, highlighting the growing importance of quantum-safe solutions for the financial sector.
During the pilot, Erste Group Bank AG tested a quantum-secure communication system designed to safeguard financial data against future cyber threats posed by quantum computing. The solution, powered by zerothird’s technology, was integrated directly into the bank’s existing fiber-optic infrastructure - marking the first time entanglement-based quantum encryption has been implemented in such an environment.
The integration represents a significant step toward strengthening cybersecurity for financial institutions. As quantum computers advance, traditional encryption methods are expected to become vulnerable, making quantum-secure communication technologies increasingly essential.
The project was made possible through close collaboration between teams from Erste Group Bank AG, A1 Telekom Austria Group, and zerothird. Key contributors included Peter Bosek, Roland Supper, and Maurizio Poletto from Erste Group Bank AG, as well as Alejandro Plater and the A1 Telekom Austria Group team.
For zerothird, the recognition by leading international media marks an important milestone and underscores the growing relevance of quantum-secure infrastructure for the future of digital finance.
With the successful completion of the pilot, the partners have taken a crucial step toward preparing financial networks for the post-quantum era - demonstrating how advanced quantum technologies can be integrated into existing communication systems to protect critical data.
As the field of quantum cybersecurity continues to evolve, collaborations between financial institutions, telecommunications providers, and quantum technology companies are expected to play a key role in building the secure digital infrastructure of the future.
